Essential Oils for the Throat Chakra

Throat Chakra Essential Oils

The throat chakra is the 5th chakra and can be balanced using specific essential oils. In traditional Sanskrit language, is known as Vishuddha, meaning pure purification.

The throat chakra is the first of the three spiritual chakras. It is the chakra that is the gateway from our more primitive-like lower chakras that dominate power, sexuality, trust and creativity to our higher chakras where we access our intellect, spiritual, and universal connection.

The throat chakra represents communication and specific parts of our body, including the mouth, jaws, tongue, pharynx, palate, shoulders, neck and thyroid (which processes energy.) It is through the 5th chakra that we verbally communicate and speak our truth to others in the world.

Through the 5th chakra we ask for what we want, need and desire. We speak our mantras from the 5th chakra, sing if we choose, scream, laugh, express our individual uniqueness in joy, pain, love and fear. The throat chakra gives us the tool to communicate our dreams, helping to put them into reality; the capacity to express energy within us to create big time movement in our lives. Through the expression of the power of speaking your truth you can bring great relief to yourself as your needs, wants and desires are processed.

“If you tell the truth you don’t have to remember anything.” – Mark Twain

“Opening the throat chakra can greatly help align your vision with reality and release pressure that may affect the heart chakra that is located just below, “ says Lizzy, author of an article on opening the throat chakra published on www.chakras.info.com.

An aligned heart allows you to speak your truth with courage. For example when you’re in love and you want to say it, or when you feel slighted by a friend and want to talk about how you feel, or when you see something unjust happening or hear something hurtful and you have to say something because if you didn’t it would undermine your integrity or cause pain to another – for example; racist comments or someone belittling or putting another person down.

When you don’t speak your truth, you create dishonesty within yourself and in your surroundings and that can lead to a very distorted reality for yourself and the people around you, and it doesn’t feel very good. In fact, ignoring your inner voice and not speaking your truth undermines your self-efficacy and damages your self-esteem. On the other hand, by speaking your truth you can create subtle to big shifts within yourself and the energies around you maintaining your integrity and keeping your spirit thriving.

The 5th chakra is considered by experts as an “important point of alignment for the whole body.” It is through this chakra we use the power of language to express ourselves and through that expression we can have an incredible impact on ourselves and others for better or for worse. In Don Miguel Ruiz’s popular book, The Four Agreements, he explains that the first and most important agreement is to be impeccable with your word. Impeccable, meaning to speak without sin, in truth, mindfully and with good intent. For when we speak mindlessly, we can wreak havoc on our internal alignment and on others.

For example, if we are having a bad day or a negative thought and project that thought or lash out on another through gossip or careless conversation, it can have consequences that are long lasting while creating beliefs or truths that can devastate lives or at the very least, ruin someone’s day.

Imbalances and Blocks in the Throat Chakra

“Self-expression is the gateway between the inner world and the outer. Only through Self-expression does the outer world get to know what’s inside of us.” – Anodea Judith

We’ve all heard the saying, “Cat got your tongue.” Sometimes and perhaps too often we are caught in situations where we find ourselves unable to say what’s on our mind. Perhaps it’s wisdom and that can be a good thing – when you are in alignment and sensing through your intuition and listening to your body. The words you choose and how you choose to use them in your day to day life have a tremendous impact on those around you, including yourself. Words and the energy you put behind them can make people feel loved, heard, and connected; or they can make people feel frightened, discouraged and disconnected. Never underestimate the power of the voice within you.

Having said that, Dr. David Simon, author of The Wisdom of Healing: A Natural Mind Body Program for Optimal Wellness, recommends three gateways to speaking your truth without undermining your personal integrity and those of others. These gateways are through three questions you may ask or promise yourself before you speak:

  • Is what I’m about to say true?
  • Is what I’m about to say necessary?
  • Is what I’m about to say kind (considerate and generous)?

“Authentic expression does not come easily, “ explains Becky Jo, author of The Throat Chakra found on www.wholeistichealing.net. She explains, “There is a delicate dance between saying what you mean and staying tactful or diplomatic. Often, it’s easier to say what the other person may want to hear instead of speaking your truth. Fear of not being accepted, or judgement from the other may hinder your truthful verbal expression.”

When your chakra system is in alignment speaking your truth should not be an issue. When you are strong throughout your chakra system you feel confident, courageous and aligned in awareness. When you are not aligned you are not living in the truth of who you are or accessing your full potential to contribute to the world around you.

How to Recognize when your Throat Chakra is out of Balance

Woman with Throat Chakra Imbalance

If your throat chakra is imbalanced, you may experience fear of speaking your truth, and inability to express your true thoughts.

According to an article published on www.chakras.info.com titled, Throat Chakra Blockage, there are physical and emotional symptoms related to a closed or imbalanced throat chakra. These symptoms are:

  • Chronic ailments such as sore throat, bad breath, dental issues, hoarseness
  • Thyroid problems – this is HUGE! If you have pent up anger or frustrations due to not standing up for yourself then you are more susceptible to issues with the thyroid.
  • Neck pain
  • Fear of speaking and inability to express thoughts
  • Shyness and inconsistency in speech and actions
  • Social anxiety – which can lead to misuse of alcohol and drugs or reclusive behaviors, diminishing your quality of life.
  • Inhibited creativity
  • Stubbornness
  • Detachment

“Perpetuated blockages that are fairly significant can cause one to become arrogant, deceptive, domineering, or manipulative. On the contrary, energy that flows freely through the throat chakra promotes effective, truthful communication. You are able to ‘find you’. You are confident, responsible, and can easily find the right words to express your thoughts.”
