PanAway Copycat Recipe & Alternative Blends to Use

young living panaway recipe

Young Living’s PanAway essential oil blend is a favorite among aromatherapy lovers. But for people avoiding the MLM company, or others wishing for a budget-friendly option, here is a fantastic DIY panaway oil recipe.

All you need is 4 essential oils, and an empty 5 ml amber glass bottle. You can get new ones here, or simply re-use an old oil bottle that you’ve cleaned and sterilized.

What Oils Are In PanAway?

The original PanAway ingredients from Young Living are:

  • Wintergreen Leaf (Gaultheria procumbens)
  • Helichrysum (Helichrysum italicum)
  • Peppermint (Mentha piperita)
  • Clove Bud (Eugenia caryophyllus)

PanAway Oil Benefits

Most people use PanAway essential oil to address minor aches and pains. It is supposed to help sore muscles and provide a soothing, cooling sensation ¹. The main recommendation is to use it in an essential oils massage after a strenuous workout or exercise.

Its pain-relieving properties come from the oil blend chosen. Helichrysum especially is a powerful first aid oil.

Its invigorating aroma provides an uplifting and refreshing aromatherapy experience.

As with all essential oils, do not put PanAway directly on the skin. Blend it with a carrier oil first, such as Sweet Almond oil or Jojoba. The essential oils are highly concentrated. Diluting them down with carriers makes it safe for your skin to absorb.

Panaway Recipe DIY

Now, if you simply want a PanAway copycat recipe, I’ve got your back! You don’t have to buy the Young Living original. It’s actually quite fun to make your own blend.

Get an empty 5 ml amber glass bottle (or use a clean recycled one), to make your blend in.

Material: glass, plastic; Product size: height: 54mm, diameter: 22mm, Capacity: 5ml; Amber glass bottles with black cap

Combine the following:

1 ml of essential oil = 20 drops approximately. Thus, 5 ml = 100 drops. For your master blend of homemade Panaway, use the 5 ml bottle size.

Is it Really Cheaper?

The Young Living PanAway oil costs anywhere between $45 to $60 for 5 ml.

The recipe I made above with Plant Therapy oils came to around $15.

Here’s my thought process: 10 ml of oil is 200 drops, approximately. Following this math, I get:

  • 1/5th of the Wintergreen bottle that I got for $7.95 = $1.60
  • Half of the Helichrysum = $12.50
  • 1/7th of the Peppermint bottle = $1
  • 1/20th Clove = $0.45

My own DIY PanAway copycat blend in a 5 ml bottle cost me approximately $15.50, using Plant Therapy oils. If I’d bought a larger bottle of Helichrysum instead of just the 2.5 ml, that price would come down even further. You can get it down to ~$10 for your DIY blend if you invest in the 10 ml size of Helichrysum italicum.

As you can see, making your own PanAway oil blend is a lot cheaper!

Young Living PanAway Substitutes

how to make panaway oil blend

Sometimes, a DIY blend recipe is great. It lets you use the single oils you have at home, and you can practice your oil blending techniques.

But sometimes, you’re just in search for an affordable alternative to YL Panaway. Maybe you want to gift it to someone, or just want to re-stock your Panaway the easy way.

I’ve got your back! I have found the following wonderful blends that would make a great substitute for Young Living Panaway.

I’ll also explain to you why these copycat blends work.

REVIVE Pain Away

REVIVE Ache Away Blend

The first substitute option for PanAway is a super easy one! REVIVE‘s official brand mission is to make it easier for people to switch away from MLM essential oil companies.

Their easy comparison chart lists REVIVE “Ache Away” as their official alternative to YL Panaway.

Rightfully so, as the essential oil ingredients are exactly the same between REVIVE Ache Away and Young Living Panaway.

The essential oils used are Wintergreen, Helichrysum, Peppermint, and Clove.

Of course, the quantities and exact blending techniques are proprietary to each essential oil company. Still, if they’re even loosely close, REVIVE Ache Away would be my first choice for an alternative blend to YL Panaway.

Rocky Mountain Oils’ First Aid Blend

Another very classy pain relief blend is “First Aid” from Rocky Mountain Oils. It is similar in composition to Young Living’s Panaway in that it only uses 4 oils.

The oils in First Aid are Rosemary, Tea Tree, Clove Bud, and Helichrysum. While these aren’t the exact oils as in PanAway, half of them do match (Helichrysum and Clove Bud). The other two (Rosemary and Tea Tree) are used instead of Peppermint and Wintergreen. All of those oils are great for sore muscles, though, so I would give the green light for these substitutions.

So overall, I think that this blend would work quite similar to PanAway when using it for pain relief.

Plant Therapy Rapid Relief

Plant Therapy is another oil company that offers alternatives to MLM companies. They make an excellent essential oil blend for pain relief. It is called “Rapid Relief” and contains Peppermint, Clove Bud, Laurel Leaf, Black Pepper, Cinnamon Cassia, Ginger Root CO2, German Chamomile, Juniper Berry, and Thyme Thymol.

This oil blend is a bit different than the classic PanAway, in that it does NOT contain Helichrysum, which is a first aid powerhouse. However, it uses black pepper, which also is superb for pain relief and addressing all sorts of aches and malaises.

Rapid Relief does not use Wintergreen essential oil either, but it uses Laurel leaf, which I think is a good substitute. Plant Therapy’s blend is rounded out with a few more “first aid” type of oils, such as Ginger, Chamomile and Thyme.

Overall, it’s not an exact match, but it is a good alternative for a cheaper version of your PanAway oil blend.

Final Thoughts

I hope I’ve been able to show you how to make a PanAway look-alike essential oil blend. Go ahead right now if you wish to craft your own master blend!

I’ve also listed a few easy copycat alternatives you can buy elsewhere.

Whether you choose to create your own, or go with another brand alternative, the benefits of this oil blend are wonderful, proven, and something you’ll likely enjoy for days to come.

Have a happy oily day!
